Lakeland junior Andre Glass received Northern Athletics Conference Player of the Year honors, and coach Doron Green was named NAC Coach of the Year following the 2009 NAC Men's Tennis Championship in Jackson, Wis.
Glass' third consecutive No. 1 singles title, along with key performances from several other players, propelled Lakeland to a third-place finish in the league with 61 team points for the season.
"Considering we finished sixth last season, we've improved by a significant margin," Green said. "It used to be Concordia (Wis.) and MSOE, and then the rest. This year we kind of broke away from the lower pack. It creates a challenge to improve on that next season."
A Kenosha native, Glass won three consecutive matches to take the championship and player of the year accolades, defeating MSOE's Juan Montenegro 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the final match.
Glass knocked off Thien Van of Concordia Chicago 6-2, 6-1, and followed with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Dominican's Zlatan Hodzic in the semifinals.
"Andre is a remarkable guy," Green said. "He's 15-0 in the conference in the last two years, and had only one loss as a freshman.
"My goal is to see him take the NAC Championship next year as well. It will be challenging, because there are a number of good freshmen in the league, as his finals match indicates."
Green '70, a member of the Lakeland Hall of Fame after a standout four-year tennis career as a Muskie, captured Coach of the Year honors in only his second season as Lakeland's head coach.
"It was an unexpected honor, in that I don't think I did anything special," Green said. "Having a full roster and dedicated players helped a lot. Those things made my job easy."
No singles or doubles spot finished lower than fifth for the Muskies, who finished with a 5-7 overall record in dual meets.
Lakeland singles players Yuki Shiono (No. 4) and Tom Kuehl (No. 5) finished third in their respective divisions. Dartanian Taylor (No. 2) and Kazu Yamasaki (No. 3) placed fourth, while No. 6 singles player Danny Spatchek placed fifth.
In doubles, Taylor and Yamasaki placed third at the No. 2 spot, while Glass/Kuehl (No. 1) and Carlos Millan/Shiono (No. 3) finished fourth in their respective brackets.
"Every single player earned points, which probably has never happened here," Green said. "We did what we were supposed to do, and had Dartanian and Danny upset higher seeds. Tom Kuehl was also a pleasant surprise. Everyone rose to the occasion."
The Muskies were picked by the conference's coaches to finish eighth in the 2009 NAC preseason poll.
