Aurora, IL----The Lakeland College women's basketball team turned an eight point halftime deficit into a six point lead with seven minutes remaining in the game, but were unable to maintain the advantage in a 75-72 Northern Athletics Conference loss to Aurora.
Lakeland (10-5, 5-3) shot just 30 percent in the opening 20 minutes and was 1-of-9 from the three point line as Aurora scored 14 seconds into the first half and never trailed before halftime.
The Muskies stormed back after halftime to take a 47-42 lead at 13:32 of the second half as Becca Tilleman hit three pointers on consecutive possessions.
The Spartans responded later in the half with a 13-0 run in five minutes to retake a 69-62 lead with 3:36 remaining.
Erin Cepa connected on a three pointer and Dana Henrichs made a jumper as the Muskies cut the Aurora lead to one twice in the final minute.
"Aurora was ready to attack us," Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson said. "We dug ourselves a hole in the first half and got our heads down a little bit. We need to start playing two complete halves of basketball."
KC Blahnik had another big day for Lakeland, scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, both team highs, and also recorded four steals and four assists. Katie Kilton (Waukesha) also tallied 16 points and was 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Becky Gifford led all scorers with 26 points for Aurora as the Spartans shot over 50 percent from the field in both halves for a 54 percent completion rate on the game. Aurora also completed 20-26 free throws compared to Lakeland's 7-10 effort on the day.
Lakeland returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at Marian for a 7 p.m. tip.
