SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland wrestling team suffered a 28-9 defeat against No. 8 Elmhurst in a dual meet Tuesday at the Wehr Center Field House.
The Muskies (2-9), who were missing three starters due to injury, were pinned only twice by the Bluejays, giving their opponents all they could handle at several positions.
Senior Ben Chapman, making his season debut at 157 pounds, edged Elmhurst's Zach Crawford by a 3-2 decision to give Lakeland its first victory of the night. The Plymouth, Wis., native recovered from an early takedown, recording a takedown of his own in the second period to hang on for the win.
"Ben did what he could," Lakeland coach Pete Rogers said. "The fact that he out-conditioned his opponent in his first match back is impressive. That doesn't happen often."
Immediately following Chapman, senior captain Jake Frias survived a third-period takedown in a 5-4 decision over Jack Lewis at 165 pounds. Frias (Oak Lawn, Ill.), who hasn't lost since Nov. 14, recorded his team-high 17th victory of the season.
"Jake wrestled the way he's capable of wrestling, which is what I expected of him," Rogers said. "He's a lot more consistent than he was last year, and he continues to roll along."
One match later, senior A.J. Aronstam posted an 8-2 decision over Mike McNeil of Elmhurst (7-2). The Waverly, N.Y., native tallied a pair of third-period takedowns in the win.
"A.J. is getting it together and being the wrestler I thought he could be when I recruited him," Rogers said.
The Muskies return to action this Saturday as they host the five-team Lakeland Multi-Duals. Matches are set to begin at 9 a.m.
