Muskies fall at rival Marian

FOND DU LAC - The Lakeland men's basketball team made its return to Northern Athletics Conference play Wednesday, dropping a 76-69 decision at North Division rival Marian in its first league contest of the new year.

The Muskies (6-7 overall, 3-2 NAC) fought back after the Sabres opened up a 10-point lead midway through the second half by way of a 3-point barrage. Lakeland, which shot 8-for-14 from beyond the arc in the second, narrowed the Marion advantage to 66-63 after a 3-pointer by sophomore forward Jake Schwarz with 3:43 remaining in the contest.

However, the Sabres (6-8, 3-3) responded with five straight points sandwiched around a pair of Lakeland turnovers to regain control of the game. Lakeland would get no closer than five the rest of the way.

Despite a stellar shooting performance from 3-point range, the Muskies shot just over 40 percent from the field overall and 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from the free throw line in the game.

Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.) led the Muskies with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Khendal Andrews (Kankakee, Ill.) and junior forward Trevor McKown (Hot Springs, S.D.) chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Sophomore guard Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) struggled from the field, but tallied nine points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Marian held a 33-31 advantage heading into the locker room after a back-and-forth first half. Neither team led by more than five points at any point in the period.

The Sabres, who shot 45.6 percent from the field, finished 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Muskies 42-34.

Lakeland returns to action Saturday at Aurora in the second half of a men's-women's doubleheader. Tip-off is slated for approximately 4:15 p.m.
