Lakeland moves below .500 in league with loss

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Lakeland men's basketball team suffered a 90-71 defeat Saturday at Wisconsin Lutheran in a Northern Athletics Conference showdown.

The Muskies (8-11 overall, 5-6 NAC), who are now 1-3 against the conference's South Division, made a 10-0 run starting with just under a minute left in the first half. Sophomore Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) capped the run with a 3-pointer, bringing Lakeland to within 41-40 with 19:07 left in the game.

However, Wisconsin Lutheran used a 10-2 spurt to regain control of the game. WLC led by no less than four points the rest of the way.

The Warriors (7-10, 6-4), who entered the contest fourth in the league in scoring, shot 52.6 percent from the floor for the game, including a blistering 63.6 percent in the second half. WLC also shot 45.8 percent from 3-point range and 19-for-23 (82.6 percent) from the free throw line.

On the other side, the Muskies shot 44.4 percent from the field and attempted just nine free throws for the game, making five.

Lakeland surrendered 13 offensive rebounds, including 10 in the first half, which led to 18 second-chance points for the Warriors. In addition, the Muskies were out-rebounded 40-26.

Sophomore forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.) led the Muskies in scoring for the 15th consecutive contest, tallying a game-high 25 points to go along with a team-best nine rebounds. Regal finished with 17 points, seven assists and three steals against just one turnover.

The Warriors outscored the Muskies, 36-22, in the paint. Lakeland converted 10-of-27 (37 percent) from 3-point range.

Wisconsin Lutheran hit three consecutive 3-pointers to jump out to a 14-6 lead just under four minutes into the contest.

Lakeland responded with consecutive 3s of its own by Schwarz and junior guard Phil Sontag (Altoona, Wis.) to stop the run.

The Muskies close out their three-game road swing this Tuesday at NAC North Division rival Edgewood at 7 p.m.

Lakeland won the first contest between the teams, 68-66, on Dec. 10 in Sheboygan.
