SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland women's volleyball team defeated UW-Superior 25-13, 25-22, 27-25 in its second game at the Muskie Classic at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Lakeland also won its first contest of the night, the team's season opener, 25-10, 25-14, 25-4 over Northern Athletics Conference foe Alverno (0-2).
The Muskies (2-0) burst out of the gates in the UW-Superior match, taking a 15-5 lead in the first set with a high-flying, energetic attack.
"We just know we play better when we're having fun and getting loud and crazy," senior outside hitter Brittanie Paulus said. "Our fans really helped us with that too. You play well and you play with better confidence when you have that much energy."
Lakeland was in control of the match until the third set, when the Yellowjackets (3-1) took a 9-3 lead. The Muskies fought back, however, receiving key contributions from senior Kaylan Kasper, and juniors Sam Shepeck and Jessica Regester, all of whom were fighting for two starting spots prior to the start of the season.
Shepeck (Gladstone, Mich.), who finished with five kills, put away a pair of key points late in the third set.
"We thought our last two starting spots would be among three people - Kaylyn, Jess and Sam," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "We started out with Kaylyn and Jess, then went to Jess and Sam and finished with Kaylyn and Sam.
"The three of them really took those two starting roles and made sure we won in three, because they each picked each other up when they needed to."
Paulus (Belgium, Wis.) led the Muskies offensively with 12 kills. Senior libero Tonia Strebelinski (Berlin, Wis.) paced the defense with 16 digs, while junior setter Kristine Raeder (Oostburg, Wis.) registered 30 assists.
In the night's first contest, the Muskies pulled away from Alverno quickly despite struggling from the service line. Sophomore middle hitter Allison Davis (Sheboygan, Wis.) posted nine kills to lead Lakeland.
"Our whole serving philosophy is different, so we're going to go through growing pains," Schreiber said. "I hope we have a match pretty soon that gives us a lot of confidence in our serving, because I've asked them to come out of their comfort zone and serve a little bit harder."
The Muskies return to action tomorrow for two more matches in their home tournament. Lakeland takes on St. Norbert (2-0) at 10 a.m. and comes back to play Ripon (2-2) at 2 p.m. in the tournament's last match.
