Lakeland concludes home tournament with victory over Ripon

SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland women's volleyball team barely missed out on a tournament championship after splitting a pair of matches Saturday at the Muskie Classic at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies (3-1) were defeated by St. Norbert, the 2009 Muskie Classic champion, by a 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 score in the team's first game of the day.

Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber was disappointed with the way the team came out in the morning match, as the Green Knights (4-0) took control quickly in each set and held on.

"Right now, our players are putting too many mental barriers in front of themselves," Schreiber said. "We need to find a way to tear them down. Our lack of self-confidence is evident when we play balls without purpose."

Senior middle hitter Kim Linger (Eldorado, Wis.) finished with seven kills, while senior libero Tonia Strebelinski (Berlin, Wis.) posted 12 digs.

Lakeland capped the tournament with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-23 triumph over Ripon.

After taking control of the first set rather quickly, the Muskies endured several nail-biting moments in the final two sets, but won points when they needed to.

In the second set, Lakeland won five of the last six points after Schreiber called a timeout with the score 22-20 in favor of Ripon.

Clinging to a 24-21 advantage in the third set, the Muskies allowed the Red Hawks (3-3) to close within 24-23. However, senior outside hitter Brittanie Paulus, who finished with 10 kills and 11 digs in the contest, quickly finished the match with a clean kill.

Senior outside hitter Kaylyn Kasper (Hilbert, Wis.) registered a team-high 11 kills to go along with five digs.

Schreiber expressed optimism regarding Lakeland's service attack despite an alarming number of service errors by the team.

"It looks like our serving is struggling, but the top end of our serving is pushing to another level," Schreiber said. "To put it in baseball terms, we are throwing too many balls, but our strikes are unhittable. We are closer to developing point-scoring serves."

Following the tournament, Paulus and Strebelinski were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Muskies resume action next Friday and Saturday at the Pizza Hut Classic at UW-Oshkosh. Lakeland will take on Elmhurst and Chicago on Friday at 5:30 and 7:30, respectively. Saturday's matches will be determined by Friday's results.
