Lakeland finishes .500 at Whitewater

The Lakeland women's volleyball team defeated Millikin 25-18, 25-20, 16-25, 25-19 to close out the two-day UW-Whitewater Invitational on Saturday.
The Muskies (20-12) split a pair of matches for the second straight day to finish 2-2 for the tournament.
"We learned a lot about focus this weekend," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "Only lapses in focus kept us from going 3-1 or maybe taking a set or two more in our losses.
"But we learned from it and played our best match of the tournament in our last match."
Earlier in the day, Lakeland fell to No. 6 UW-Whitewater 25-19, 25-22, 25-12.
On Friday, the Muskies lost to UW-Platteville 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22 and won 15-25, 25-14, 23-25, 26-24, 16-14 over St. Ambrose, which upset No. 9 Carthage earlier in the tournament.
Against Millikin, Lakeland received solid all-around contributions from several players. Seniors Kim Linger and Brittanie Paulus paced the offense with 11 kills apiece, while senior Kaylyn Kasper, who Schreiber said played "the best weekend of her career" at right side, posted a team-high 13 digs.
Junior setter Kristine Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) tallied 36 assists, seven digs and three service aces.
In the UW-Whitewater match, Lakeland took a lead midway through the second set, but was unable to keep the momentum as the host team controlled the remainder of the match.
Junior Sam Shepeck (Gladstone, Mich.) led the Muskies with seven kills in the match. Paulus recorded a team-best 17 digs.
"Sam was a workhorse this weekend," Schreiber said. "She didn't tire playing six rotations in the back row. She became the server I thought she could become."
Lakeland, the No. 2 seed in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament, hosts seventh-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran in a first round match set for 7 p.m. at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Last season, the Muskies captured their second consecutive NAC Tournament title and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. They were knocked off in the first round by UW-Oshkosh in three sets.
