Softball drops pair in Tucson

The Lakeland softball team dropped its first games of the 2010 season Wednesday, falling short in a 4-3 loss to Augsburg before dropping the nightcap 9-2 against St. Scholastica.

The Muskies (4-2) found themselves trailing 4-0 after four innings when Augsburg put up a three spot in the fourth. Senior Sara Roberts cut the deficit in half with a two run home run in the 6th. Chelsea Coenen pulled Lakeland to within one in the top of the seventh with a run scoring triple but was stranded at third when Roberts recorded the game's final out.

"Sara's swinging a hot bat and was who we wanted in that situation," Lakeland coach Chad Buchmann said. "Coming into that at bat she was 2-3 with a double and a home run. They changed pitchers just for that at bat."

Senior Cassie Felton picked up the loss with four innings pitched. Freshman Erin Henk threw two innings without allowing a run.

Lakeland struggled to hold off St. Scholastica in the second game. Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, the Muskies tied the contest when Henk scored on a sacrifice fly to right field. An errant throw allowed freshman Heather Haeflinger to come around from second to score as well. Mistakes in the field and strikeouts on offense held the Lakeland offense at bay as St. Scholastica scored seven more runs in the dominant victory.

Roberts recorded her 300th career strikeout in four innings pitched. Freshman Brittany Myszka finished the game with three strong innings in the circle.

Lakeland returns to action in the Tucson Invitational Games on Thursday with Wisconsin-La Crosse before its third and final game against Augsburg.
