Athletics - posted on 3/19/2010

The Lakeland College softball team ended its 10 game stay at the Tucson Invitational Games on Friday night with an 8-0 victory in five innings against Otterbein before a 20-12 defeat to North Central.

Freshman April Schmitz drove in Sam Shepeck and Erin Henk from third and second, respectively, with no outs in the bottom of the second inning to give Lakeland a 2-0 lead. After Heather Haeflinger  and Jenny LaLuzerne reached to load the bases, senior Chelsea Coenen cleared the bases with a triple to right center to push the Muskie advantage to 5-0.

Coenen drove in LaLuzerne again in the fourth inning to increase the lead to six. The Muskies ended the game in the fifth inning when LaLuzerne singled in Jenni Klamm with the bases loaded for the eight run victory.

Senior Sara Roberts allowed six hits and recorded one strike out in five innings pitched for Lakeland.

Runs came easily for both teams in Lakeland's final game of the week again North Central. Lakeland pulled ahead 12-11 in the fourth after falling behind 11-7 in the third inning. That lead would be short lived as North Central took a 15-12 advantage in the fifth inning and eventually pulled away with a 20-12 win. Roberts started the contest with Brittany Myszka and Cassie Felton  throwing a few innings each.

Lakeland ends play in Tucson with a 5-5 record and returns to non-conference play on April 3 with a doubleheader at home against Cardinal Stritch at 1 p.m.
