Softball powers way past Edgewood

Athletics - posted on 4/5/2010

The Lakeland College softball team outscored Edgewood 22-5 en route to a pair of 9-2 and 13-3 victories Monday afternoon as both teams began 2010 Northern Athletics Conference play.

Sophomore Leah Sheahan (Salem, Wis.) and senior Sara Roberts (Escanaba, Mich.) each drove in five runs and senior KC Blahnik (Gladstone, MIch.) scored five times as nine players scored at least one run in the pair of dominant performances.

"We had a bad taste after the Cardinal Stritch games last week," Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann said. "I wasn't concerned with our defense, but we needed to get our lineup together. We put together a lineup today that worked well and hit the ball."

Senior Corine Demske (Wrightstown, Wis.) hit a two run blast, her first career home run, in the third inning as the Muskies scored five runs on five hits and an error to take a commanding 7-2 lead. They tacked on a pair in the sixth for the eventual 9-2 victory.

"It was awesome that Corine got her first career homer after working so hard this season," Buchmann said. "We worked hard as a team today and did a good job of getting the ball in play. It was good to see us displaying some confidence. We want to get back to being consistent in all nine spots of the lineup, and today was a good step towards that goal."

That consistency showed itself in the back end of the doubleheader as all nine Lakeland starters recorded at least one hit as the Muskies took a 9-2 lead after two innings in the dominating performance. Blahnik scored in all three plate appearances and is currently hitting .452 on the year with 17 runs, both team-highs.

Roberts scored victories in the circle in each game, improving her record this season to 7-3. She threw a total of 12 innings, giving up 14 hits and walking one with an ERA on the day of 2.33. She currently leads Lakeland with 19 RBI and is just five away from her total of 24 last season.

Lakeland returns to NAC play on Tuesday, April 6 with a doubleheader at Marian. First pitch in Fond du Lac is slated for 5 p.m.
