Sheahan blasts three as Muskies split with Carroll
Athletics - posted on 4/15/2010
Sophomore Leah Sheahan tallied three home runs on Thursday as the Lakeland College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Carroll, winning the opener 14-6 in five innings before falling 12-10.
Sheahan, batting fifth in the lineup today, now holds the team lead with four home runs this season, all coming this week after her first blast of the year Monday night at Marian.
"Leah had a career day for us," Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann said. "I can't remember anyone hitting three home runs on our home field before."
Lakeland (14-8) quickly broke away in the opener, scoring nine after two and taking a 12-0 lead into the fourth. Freshman Jenny LaLuzerne and senior Sara Roberts each drove in four as Sheahan recorded three RBI as the Muskies tagged Carrol starter Christine Roggemann for 14 hits and 14 runs in 4.2 innings.
Roberts won her 11th game of the season, throwing five innings and striking out four while allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits.
"We did a great job in carrying momentum over from Monday's games at Marian into game one, we were able to score at will," Buchmann said. "Struggling in the first inning of game two made us change our game plan, and too many errors ended up hurting us."
Lakeland struggled to record outs in the first inning of the second game, allowing Carroll to bat through the line up as they knocked in six runs on eight hits.
The Muskies were able to erase the lead and eventually took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the second when Sheahan drove in two runs on her third homer of the day to deep left field.
Lakeland errors proved to be costly as Carroll (rebounded from a 10-7 deficit to tally three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to go up by two heading into the final half inning.
"We didn't just give up errors, we gave up errors that led to multiple runs," Buchmann said.
Sheahan represented the game-winning run with runners on first and second but skied a ball to left field for the final out of the two-run loss.
Roberts was saddled with the loss after entering in relief of starter Cassie Felton.
LaLuzerne pushed her batting average on the year to a team-high .464 after an 8-of-8 effort at the plate today. She drove in a series-high eight runs and also scored three times. Roberts followed with seven RBI and Sam Shepeck drove in five as the Muskies' four-five-six hitters accounted for 20 of their 23 RBI on the day.
Lakeland returns to Northern Athletics Conference play this weekend with games at Dominican and Concordia Chicago in River Forest, Ill.
