The Lakeland College softball team dropped a pair of tightly contested games Friday night, losing 5-3 and 4-3 in a non-conference doubleheader against St. Norbert in DePere, Wis.
Lakeland (19-11) manufactured a run in the top of the third to tie the score at 1-1 after Heather Haeflinger walked to lead off the inning. She reached third base after a steal of second and a sacrifice bunt by KC Blahnik and came around to score on a Chelsea Coenen single.
St. Norbert (24-6) responded in the bottom half, scoring four runs off of four hits against Lakeland starter Brittany Myszka to take a 5-1 advantage.
Coenen drove in the final runs of the game in the top of the fifth, homering to score Blahnik on a two-run blast to close the Green Knights' lead to 5-3.
Coenen paced the offensive attack, leading the Muskies with three hits and three runs batted in.
Game two found the Muskies trailing 1-0 again after the first inning, but they took their first lead of the day with three runs in the top of the second to go ahead 3-1. Leah Sheahan hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season to lead off the inning. Erin Henk and Sam Shepeck each singled to put runners on first and second.Alyssa Nelson singled to right to load the bases with one out, and following the second out of the inning Blahnik doubled to drive in a pair.
St. Norbert tallied a run in the bottom half of the inning on a one-out double to cut the Muskie lead to one, but the Green Knights made their move in the bottom of the fifth inning. With a runner on second, Morgan Buboltz homered to score two and give St. Norbert a 4-3 lead.
Lakeland finished the game with three runs on seven hits, with Blahnik and Henk tallying two hits each.
The Muskies return home on Saturday to begin a critical four game weekend stand against the top two teams in the Northern Athletic Conference. Lakeland welcomes Aurora on Saturday with NAC leader Benedictine coming to campus on Sunday.
For Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann, getting consistent offense out of his lineup will be the key to the Muskies' success in the next four games.
"We need to get our best hitters in the lineup, even if it means putting them out of position on defense" Buchmann said. "We need to get people into the game that can hit."
Both series are scheduled to start at noon this weekend, weather-permitting. Check the Lakeland website for updates throughout the weekend .
