Lakeland athletics to honor U.S. Army, National Guard this Saturday

Athletics - posted on 10/5/2009

Local soldiers from the U.S. Army and National Guard will be honored at this Saturday's Lakeland football Homecoming game against Wisconsin Lutheran at 1 p.m.

Prior to the start of the game, a moment of silence will be observed in remembrance of those who serve in local groups of the armed forces, and those who served and died for their country.

According to event coordinator Dan Burke, Lakeland was selected as one of a limited number of NCAA affiliated schools in the country to host the event.

Both the Wisconsin National Guard and Sheboygan U.S. Army battalion have been overseas for the past six to seven months in active duty.

"I think this will be a fantastic addition to all the other events around the College for Homecoming weekend," Burke said. "In addition, it will be a great chance for Lakeland to honor those who have served our country in the local community. It should add some flair to the game."

Local members of the U.S. Army battalion will be set up in the South end zone, where personalized, commemorative dog tags will be available at no charge to fans. Lakeland student-athletes will each receive a printed, personalized dog tag.

A 105 mm U.S. National Guard salute cannon will be fired from the North end zone as the Muskies enter the field, immediately following the national anthem and after each extra point is kicked following a Lakeland touchdown.

John Lemke '91, who will be inducted into the Lakeland Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, will fire the cannon. Fans are invited to take pictures with the cannon and with National Guard and Army members.

"At this event, we hope to honor those who have served and are serving overseas from the Sheboygan County area and all places surrounding the Lakeland community," Burke said.
