Muskies nipped twice by Eagles
Athletics - posted on 5/9/2010
The Lakeland baseball team wrapped up its 2010 campaign with a pair of losses, 3-1 and 7-4, at Edgewood in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader on Sunday in Verona, Wis.
The Muskies conclude the season with a 21-19 overall record, the program's first 20-win season since 2005. Lakeland also finished above .500 in league play with a 12-10 mark.
In Game 1, Lakeland strung together eight hits, but scored only one run, in the seventh inning, off a sacrifice fly from junior Jeremy Meier (Sauk City, Wis.).
Senior pitcher Lee Chepil (5-3) wrapped up his career with yet another solid showing. The Ladysmith, Wis., native pitched all eight innings, surrendering just three earned runs while striking out six.
Chepil finishes the 2010 season second for innings (78.1) and fourth for strikeouts (68) in one season, in program history.
Edgewood (27-13, 17-5 NAC), which clinched a share of the NAC regular season title and a spot in the four-team conference tournament, recorded 11 hits and received a stellar performance from pitcher Matt Krueger (7-1), who tossed a complete game and struck out nine.
Junior David Novak (Algoma, Wis.) and sophomore Stephen Kalina (Lake Villa, Ill.) registered two hits apiece to lead the Muskie offense.
In the nightcap, Lakeland took an early lead but committed four errors and mustered just two hits compared to 13 for the Eagles.
In the top of the second inning, Meier and freshman Cody Riemer (Marion, Wis.) posted run-scoring hits to give the Muskies a 3-0 advantage.
Meier, who scored twice and stole a base in the contest, touched the plate in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch to bring Lakeland within a run.
Edgewood, which scored four times in the bottom of the fourth, added two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.
Starting pitcher Matt Katzman (4-3) gave up five runs (one earned) and scattered 11 hits in seven innings of work.
Along with Chepil, seniors Jacob Heinemeyer (Shiocton, Wis.) and Doug Novak (Algoma, Wis.) also put on the Lakeland uniform for the final time on Sunday. Heinemeyer and Novak tallied one hit apiece in the opener.
