Muskie Spotlight - Kristine Raeder
Athletics - posted on 10/26/2009
Replacing a three-time, first-team all-conference performer isn't easy, but Kristine Raeder has shown it can be done for the Lakeland women's volleyball team.
Raeder, a first-year starter at setter after backing up Jessica Sparling for two seasons, performed well last week as the Muskies posted a 3-0 record, including a 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 home win over first-place Benedictine on Saturday. The victory gave the Muskies a share of the Northern Athletics Conference regular season title.
Raeder tallied 114 assists (10.36 per set), four service aces and 25 digs in the three-match span.
The Oostburg, Wis., native's decision making is one of the reasons she leads the league with 959 assists (9.79 per set). The team also leads the conference with 1,134 assists.
Raeder is also one of the team's best servers with 25 service aces on the season, which is second on the team.
"Kristine serves tough and makes good decisions," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "She has always been one of our better servers, and she is able to think the game very well. What she doesn't think of on her own, she's able to
absorb quickly through coaching and correction."
Raeder, who has been a key contributor in each of her three seasons with the Muskies, has also proven to be a capable defender. She is third on the squad with 299 digs this season.
Raeder is a business management major and is minoring in Spanish. She also serves as the secretary for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and is a member of the Spanish Club.
