Lakeland loses heartbreaker to Beloit

Athletics - posted on 9/23/2010

The Lakeland men's soccer team lost in an up and down game, 3-2 to Beloit College Thursday night in Beloit, Wis.

Beloit scored early on the Muskies on a fluke goal 10 minutes into the game. The Muskies regrouped quickly after and shut out the Buccaneers for the remainder of the half, but found themselves down 1-0.

The Muskies came out eager to score in the second half when freshman Josh Lapka (Fargo, N.D.) found the back of the Buccaneer's net in the 52nd minute of the game to tie the game at 1-1.

The momentum rapidly changed as Beloit's Junki Endoh scored just eight minutes after the Muskies did to take the led 2-1. Just three minutes later, Lakeland junior Jeremy Hardy (Cooks, Mich.) scored to tie the game once again at 2-2.

The Buccaneer's however, were able to find the back of the net once more when Ryan Munger scored in the 66th minute to put Beloit up 3-2.

"We definitely had our chances to tie the game and take it into over time," said head coach Tony Pierce. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to do that and came up short.

"It was disappointing because I thought we were the better team tonight. Ultimately, we didn't defend well enough to win the game."

The Muskies return to Northern Athletics Conference action Saturday, Sept. 25 in a road contest against first place Dominican University. Game time is 1 p.m.
