Lakeland ties Concordia-Wis. in NAC action

The Lakeland men's soccer team tied Concordia- Wis., 2-2 in Northern Athletics Conference action Tuesday evening at Muskie Field.

The Muskies scored in the seventh minute of the game when junior forward Jeremy Hardy (Cooks, Mich.) found junior Adam Benson (Anoka, Minn.) inside the six yard line. Benson volleyed the ball into the back of the Falcons net to put Lakeland on top, 1-0.

Just one minute later, the Falcons answered and scored off of a free kick. Concordia-Wisconsin's, James Kroll scored on a header to tie the game, 1-1.

Lakeland went on top again in the 21st minute when Benson, assisted by junior Ben Koepsell (Cedar Grove, Wis.) scored again to make it, 2-1.

Concordia-Wis., responded soon after when Bryan Samuel scored off of a corner kick in the 25th minute to tie the game.

Head coach Tony Pierce was pleased with the team's effort.

"It was a battle between a top team in the conference," said Pierce. "I think the result was fair."

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Piekarski (Menasha,Wis.) had another tremendous showing. In the second overtime, with 1:36 left on the clock, the Falcons had an opportunity to win the game with a penalty kick, but were stopped short when Piekarski made the save.

After fearless battles and up and down play, the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Lakeland returns to NAC action on Saturday, Oct. 2 against Rockford College at Muskie Field. Game time is 2 p.m.
