Lakeland drops heartbreaker against rival

SHEBOYGAN - The No. 10 Lakeland men's volleyball won two of the first three sets on Friday night, but was defeated 23-25, 25-13, 26-28, 25-21, 15-12 by second-ranked UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Volleyball Conference contest at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies (9-2 overall, 3-2 WVC), who had knocked off the Titans in the most recent match-up between the two teams, looked prime to win for the second straight time after taking a 2-1 set advantage.

However, with the score tied at 14-14 in the second set, Oshkosh (11-1, 7-0) made a crucial four-point run that proved to be the difference in the set.

The Titans jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the fifth set, which Lakeland was unable to overcome despite a furious rally.

With the exception of the second, each set was tightly contested, much to the delight of a raucous crowd on hand.

"I said going into this you never want to lose, but it was entertaining and I really enjoyed watching this match," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "(UW-Oshkosh's) serve was virtually overpowering at times, and we made some offensive mistakes that compounded our problems."

Offensively, Lakeland was led by outside hitter Joe Julkowski (Carol Stream, Ill.), who had 17 kills, and sophomore setter Mitch Wiskirchen (Schaumburg, Ill.), who had 45 assists.

Sophomore libero Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the back row with 14 digs, while junior middle hitter Beau Bradshaw (Oak Lawn, Ill.) helped the defense with four blocks.

The Muskies return to action next Friday at UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
