Softball splits pair against Cardinal Stritch

The Lakeland College softball team fell short of a two game sweep Friday night, winning the opener against Cardinal Stritch 5-2 before falling in the nightcap 9-7 in the Muskies' 2010 home opener on the Lakeland campus.
Tied 0-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning in game one, KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.) hit a come-backer to pitcher Kayla Schlegel that resulted in an error with the bases loaded and the first Muskie run. Freshman Jessie Eichner (Germantown) followed with an infield single to second that scored freshman Erin Henk (Hoopeston, Ill.). Following a passed ball two batters later that scored Blahnik, senior Chelsea Coenen ripped a ball into center field for her sixth triple of the season and gave Lakeland (6-6) a 5-0 lead.
Cardinal Stritch (3-15) tacked on a pair in the top of the sixth on a two run home run deep to center from Hillary Triebetowski to cut the lead to three. The Wolves eventually loaded the bases on a pair of singles and an error before striking out and popping up to short to end the inning.
They brought the tying run to the plate with one out in their half of the seventh before recording two consecutive fly outs in left to end the three run Lakeland win.
"Sara did a good job of getting people out with one pitch instead of trying to overpower batters," Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann said.
Roberts (5-4) threw all seven innings of the victory, allowing eight hits and two runs with no walks while striking out six.
The Muskies started off stronger in game two when Blahnik doubled to center and eventually scored on an error to plate the first run of the game. Lakeland added two more in the bottom of the third when Roberts doubled in Blahnik and sophomore Leah Sheahan (Salem) to build the lead to 3-0.
The advantage proved to be short-lived as Cardinal Stritch recorded seven runs on seven hits and an error in the fourth inning, knocking out starting pitcher Cassie Felton and Henk in relief.
The Muskies got a run back in the fifth when freshman Heather Haeflinger drove in Eichner on a triple to right center, but gave back two more when the Wolves plated a pair of runs in top of the sixth to boost their lead to 9-4.
Chelsea Coenen hit her seventh triple of the season in the sixth inning with two on and scored on a single from Sheahan as Lakeland closed to within two at 9-7 heading into the final inning. After shutting down all three Cardinal Stritch batters in the top of the seventh, freshman Alyssa Schuttenhelm (Waterford) led off the bottom half with a pinch hit double into the left center gap. She would wind up stranded as the Muskies recorded three straight outs to close the 9-7 loss.
"When you give up seven runs in an inning, you aren't going to win too many games," Buchmann said. "For being on the shelf for two weeks we did a lot of good things, but not enough to win the game. We can't be complacent with a 3-0 lead against a team playing their eighth game in four days."
Henk gave up two hits and three runs, two earned while recording the loss, her first decision of the season.
Lakeland softball returns to action on Monday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m. as the Muskies open 2010 Northern Athletics Conference play with a twin bill against Edgewood.
