Muskies swept against Bethel
Athletics - posted on 3/19/2010
The Lakeland baseball team suffered consecutive setbacks, 6-5 and 8-0, in a pair of seven-inning contests against Bethel (Minn.) on Friday at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla.
In Game 1, the Muskies (5-4 overall) put the go-ahead run on with one out in the top of the seventh after a walk by junior Cal Post (Appleton) and a base hit by junior Brad Young (West Bend, Wis.). Lakeland was unable to plate either runner, however, as Bethel's John Slick posted a strikeout and induced a fly out to end the game.
The Muskies left nine men on base in the contest, including five in the last two innings.
Lakeland took a 3-1 advantage in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-run double by Post. Bethel (9-5) regained the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the inning off junior pitcher Matt Katzman (Prairie du Sac, Wis.), who took the loss.
Junior Andrew Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) knocked in a pair of runs, while senior Jacob Heinemeyer (Shiocton, Wis.) and junior Ryan Polizzi (Woodstock, Ill.) tallied two hits apiece for Lakeland.
In the second game, the Muskies mustered just three hits as the Royals piled up four runs off starting pitcher Mike Ruzek (1-1) in the top of the third inning to take an early 5-0 lead.
Ruzek, a Manitowoc, Wis., native, surrendered three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore Erik Kozey (Medford, Wis.) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for Lakeland.
The Muskies close out their spring break trip with another game against Bethel on Saturday at 9 a.m. (EST).
