Muskies fall in season opener

Athletics - posted on 9/1/2010

The Lakeland women's soccer team dropped their season opener 6-0 against North Central in Naperville, Ill. , Wednesday night.

North Central scored early, capping goals in the third and fifth minutes. Hope Stayer and Rachael Houp both had a pair of goals for the Cardinals.

Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Sarbacker ( Middleton, Wis. ) had a game-high 17 saves.

"Ashley played great. She did a lot of work in goal and came up big with saves," said head coach Tony Pierce.

Falling 4-0 at half, Pierce reorganized and made adjustments in the second half that kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for the first 35 minutes.

"We played a lot better in the second half. This was an eye-opening experience that will get us ready for conference play," said Pierce.

Lakeland (0-1) heads to Minnesota for Labor Day Weekend with matches against Martin Luther Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. and St. Mary's Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.
