Muskies bow out in quarterfinals at Hoosier-Illini

The No. 2 Lakeland men's volleyball team suffered a 25-19, 25-20 loss to eighth-ranked UW-Oshkosh on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the two-day, 30-team Hoosier-Illini Classic in Bloomington, Ind.

The defeat to the Titans is the third this season for the Muskies in four chances. Lakeland (16-4 overall, 6-2 Wisconsin Volleyball Conference) last defeated UW-Oshkosh on Feb. 6 at a Midwest 10 Playdate in three sets.

The Muskies began play in the Gold Bracket on Sunday with a 25-16, 25-16 triumph over Notre Dame to set up the showdown against the Titans.

After dropping its opening match in pool play, Lakeland recovered nicely with three consecutive victories on Saturday to set up competition in the championship round Sunday.

The Muskies defeated DuPage (25-21, 25-11), Cincinnati (25-18, 27-25) and Missouri (25-23, 25-13) after being knocked off by Illinois "B" 17-25, 25-13, 15-13.

Middle hitter Avdo Omerbegovic (Chicago, Ill.) paced Lakeland at the net with 40 kills and 14 blocks for the tournament. Outside hitter Joe Julkowski (Carol Stream, Ill.) added 37 kills, while sophomore setter Mitch Wiskirchen (Schaumburg, Ill.) totaled 127 assists.

Defensively, sophomore libero Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee, Wis.) tallied 40 digs in the six matches.

The Muskies host Marquette in WVC action this Thursday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. Luke Herriges (Campbellsport, Wis.), Dan Judkins (Kaukauna, Wis.), Perry Ringfelt (Elwood, Ill.) and Tyler Thiesfeldt (Green Bay, Wis.) will be honored as part of Senior Night festivities at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
