The No. 9 Lakeland men's volleyball team captured its third Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Tournament title in the last four years with a dramatic 25-18, 24-26, 16-14 victory over fourth-ranked UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, March 13, in Whitewater, Wis.
The Muskies (27-6 overall) surrendered a 17-12 advantage in the second set and played from behind early in the third set, but were able to recover and take the conference crown. Lakeland had lost its last three matches against the Titans, who still own a 4-2 advantage in matches played this season.
In the semifinals, Lakeland knocked off No. 22 UW-Whitewater, which had defeated the Muskies just four days earlier, by a 25-20, 21-25, 15-9 score.
"We were down 9-6 in the third set, so we made a heck of a run to end the match," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "That was the first good match we played in weeks, and it set the table for the championship."
After the final match, middle hitter Avdo Omerbegovic (Chicago, Ill.) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Outside hitters Joe Julkowski (Carol Stream, Ill.) and Dane Maier (Middleton, Wis.) joined Omerbegovic on the All-Tournament team.
Sophomore Chris Guimon (Bartlett, Ill.) was named to the JV All-Tournament team. Lakeland finished third in the JV division.
Lakeland rolled through matches played earlier in the day, defeating UW-Platteville (25-11, 25-9) in the tournament quarterfinals, and UW-Stout (25-10, 25-18) in pool play.
On Friday in pool play, the Muskies knocked off UW-Stevens Point (25-11, 29-27) and UW-La Crosse (21-25, 25-23, 15-12).
Following the tournament, several Lakeland student-athletes were honored for their achievements during the 2010 season.
Julkowski, the league's season kills leader, received WVC Co-MVP honors, along with setter Nate Sederberg of UW-Oshkosh. Omerbegovic, who led the conference and is the school's all-time leader in blocks, also collected All-WVC team accolades.
Sophomore libero Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee, Wis.) was named honorable mention All-WVC after leading the league in digs.
The Muskies also garnered a pair of academic awards. Senior right side Dan Judkins (Kaukauna, Wis.) received the conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, while senior Tyler Thiesfeldt (Green Bay, Wis.) was named academic All-WVC.
Lakeland returns to action at the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Championships on March 27-28 in Oshkosh, Wis. Match times and opponents are TBA.
