Lakeland swept in NAC road opener

The Lakeland baseball team was swept 4-1 and 13-5 by defending league champion Concordia Chicago in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon in River Forest, Ill.
In Game 1, the Muskies (9-7 overall, 1-3 NAC) were unable to back a solid performance by senior pitcher Lee Chepil (Ladysmith, Wis.), who took the loss after surrendering four earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts in eight innings.
The opener was a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Concordia Chicago (16-3, 4-0) broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the frame on three hits and a throwing error.
Lakeland scored its lone run of the contest in the top of the sixth, but left the bases loaded to end the inning. After a run-scoring single by junior Cal Post (Appleton, Wis.), the Muskies were unable to take advantage of a walk with two on.
"Lee did a heck of a job again against a great offense," Lakeland coach Chris Thousand said. "There were a couple big plays we missed out on, whether it was an extra base that could have meant a run or a strikeout in a big situation."
The Cougars' Jason Jusk (3-2) kept Lakeland in check for the remainder of the game, finishing his complete game effort with consecutive ground outs.
Post finished with two of the Muskies' four hits in the contest.
In the second game, Concordia Chicago pounded out 18 hits and scored four runs in both the fourth and seventh innings to put the game away.
Lakeland did most of its damage in the first three innings, taking a 4-2 advantage in the third with a homer by Post to deep center field. Junior David Novak (Algoma, Wis.) doubled in junior Andrew Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) in the first to give the Muskies an early lead.
"I can't say enough about Concordia's offense," Thousand said. "We got behind them in the count early and had to throw strikes to them. We scored early but couldn't stop them from scoring."
Sophomore pitcher Garrett Vincetich-Morris, who pitched the fourth and surrendered four earned runs, took his second loss of the season. The Muskies pitching staff surrendered four home runs in the contest.
CUC's Ryan Thorsen moved to 3-0 after giving up three earned runs in eight innings of work.
Senior Jacob Heinemeyer (Shiocton, Wis.), junior Brad Young (West Bend, Wis.) and sophomore Stephen Kalina (Lake Villa, Ill.) tallied two hits apiece for Lakeland, while Post finished with three RBIs.
The Muskies return to the field this Saturday at Benedictine. First pitch in the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
