SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland baseball team lost a pair of games against MSOE, 8-1 and 9-8, on Sunday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader at Muskie Field.
The Muskies (11-9 overall, 3-5 NAC) nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback in the second game. After falling behind 7-1, Lakeland rallied for seven runs in the final three innings, including a pair in the bottom of the ninth, to tie the contest at 8-8.
However, the Raiders (7-16, 3-5) quickly scored a run off junior reliever Jeremy Williams (0-1) in the top of the 10th to take back the lead for good.
Despite knocking 15 hits in the game, the Muskies left 17 men on base, including one in every inning but the third.
Lakeland nearly won the game in the ninth, tying the game with consecutive two-out, run-scoring singles. Junior Brad Young (West Bend, Wis.), who finished with a pair of hits in the game, was then intentionally walked to load the bases. However, sophomore Stephen Kalina (Lake Villa, Ill.) flew out to right to end the threat.
The Muskies scored four times in the eighth to draw within 7-6 after two-out hits by senior Doug Novak, junior Cal Post and Young.
MSOE added what proved to be an important run in the top of the ninth, when Emery Hull hooked a deep fly ball inside the foul pole for a home run.
Novak (Algoma, Wis.) and Post (Appleton, Wis.) finished with three hits apiece for Lakeland. Starting pitcher Garrett Morris (Janesville, Wis.) allowed four earned runs in six innings of work.
In Game 1, seven walks by the Lakeland pitching staff helped the Raiders score seven unanswered runs after both teams scored a run in the first inning.
Senior Jacob Heinemeyer (Shiocton, Wis.), who reached base twice in the game, scored on a groundout by junior David Novak (Algoma, Wis.). The Muskies recorded only five hits in the contest.
Freshman Andy Chitwood (2-1) took the loss, while MSOE's Jake Lathers went the distance for his first win of the year.
Lakeland returns to action this Tuesday at home against Cardinal Stritch (NAIA). First pitch in the non-conference doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
