SHEBOYGAN - Junior Ryan Polizzi's single in the bottom of the eighth inning helped the Lakeland baseball team win 12-11 in extra innings and split a doubleheader against Cardinal Stritch in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Lakeland.
The Muskies (12-10 overall) lost the first of the two contests, which were scheduled for seven innings, by a 7-0 score.
Down 9-2 through 5 1/2 innings in Game 2, Lakeland battled back to score nine runs in the final three frames to tie the score at 11-11 and set up the game winning play.
In the bottom of the eighth, junior Jeremy Meier (Sauk City, Wis.), who doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on Polizzi's single through the right side and scored the winning run when the Wolves' right fielder bobbled the ball momentarily.
Junior pitcher Andrew Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) picked up his first career victory after getting out of a two-on, one-out jam in the top of the eighth.
Polizzi (Woodstock, Ill.) finished with four hits and an RBI, while Meier and junior David Novak (Algoma, Wis.) tallied three hits apiece.
"We talked between games about showing heart, and our guys showed it there in the second game," Lakeland coach Chris Thousand. "We had a lot of different guys step up offensively and on the mound."
The Muskies tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Schartner hit a sacrifice fly to score senior Doug Novak (Algoma, Wis.), who hit a pinch-hit double earlier in the frame.
Lakeland totaled 17 hits in the contest, compared to 10 for Cardinal Stritch (12-19).
Six different pitchers appeared in the game for the Muskies, including starter Justin Reminger (Leopolis, Wis.), who pitched two innings in his collegiate debut.
In Game 1, Lakeland mustered only four hits and was shut out for only the second time all season. The Muskies had only one runner advance past second base in the game.
Polizzi, the starting pitcher, took his second loss of the season after striking out five in 5 1/3 innings.
Lakeland was led offensively by catcher David Novak, who recorded a hit and a walk.
The Muskies resume Northern Athletics Conference play this Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Rockford.
