Lakeland senior Lee Chepil was named to the 2009-10 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Baseball second team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced late Thursday.

Chepil, a right-handed pitcher, recently graduated with a degree in sports studies and minors in sports management and business. He carried a 3.64 cumulative grade point average at the time of nomination.

A Ladysmith, Wis., native, Chepil has been dominant as the ace of the Muskie pitching staff in 2010. He currently leads the Northern Athletics Conference with 70.1 innings pitched, and is among league leaders in earned run average (1.79), opposing batting average (.223) and strikeouts (62).

In 11 appearances this season, including eight starts, Chepil (5-2) hasn't allowed more than four earned runs in any contest. He has thrown five complete games, including shutouts in wins over Lawrence (March 31)  and Benedictine (April 10).

On April 4, 2009, Chepil tossed the first perfect game in school history during a seven-inning, 18-0 victory at Maranatha Baptist. He retired all 21 batters he faced and struck out eight in the fantastic performance.

A total of eight NAC student-athletes were selected to the 2009-10 Academic All-District teams.

To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 3.30 GPA and appear in at least 50 percent of their team's contests. Pitchers must have pitched at least 10.0 innings.
