Senior KC Blahnik, a standout, two-sport student-athlete and honors student at Lakeland College, has received the 2010 Northern Athletics Conference Woman of the Year award.
Blahnik, a Gladstone, Mich., native, is a NAC Player of the Year award winner and all-region performer in both women's basketball and softball. She is also an academic All-American in both sports and is actively involved on the Lakeland campus and in the Sheboygan area.
"We are extremely proud of KC, not just for her accomplishments as a student-athlete, but for the person she is," Lakeland athletic director Jane Bouche said. "This is the first award of this kind that any student-athlete at Lakeland has ever won. She embodies the true spirit of the Woman of the Year honor with her competitiveness, dedication, leadership and intelligence."
In April, Blahnik was named the school's Female Athlete of the Year for the second straight year after guiding the softball team to a 30-win season in 2009 and leading the 2009-10 women's basketball team to a NAC Tournament championship and bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. She earned the league's Player of the Year award following each season.
Blahnik recently earned her second straight Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Great Lakes Region team mention after a stellar 2010 softball season, in which she finished among conference and national leaders in several statistical categories.
Blahnik is a four-time CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team honoree and a two-time Academic All-American. She also earned NAC Scholar-Athlete recognition four times.
Blahnik graduated this May with a bachelor's degree in psychology and earned summa cum laude honors. She was one of seven seniors to complete the academic requirements of Lakeland's Honors Program.
Her honors research focused on helping a group of elders at the Sheboygan Senior Center with issues related to self-efficacy. Her project taught the seniors about these topics with an emphasis on fitness and physical activity. Utilizing the video game Wii Fitness Bundle Plus, she worked to provide a tool to help these seniors increase their self-efficacy through physical activity.
In addition to taking part in over a dozen community service projects throughout her career, Blahnik was a resident assistant, tutor and active member of the Psychology Club on campus.
Blahnik has been named Lakeland's women's basketball graduate assistant coach for next season, and she will enter Lakeland's master of arts in counseling program in preparation for her ultimate goal of a career coaching on the college level.
As the winner of the conference honor, Blahnik is eligible to receive the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year award. The top 10 honorees from Divisions I, II and III will be recognized on Oct. 17 at a dinner in Indianapolis, Ind., where the national winner will be announced.
