Athletics - posted on 5/20/2010

David Madsen, the head coach of the Lakeland men's and women's soccer programs, will take on an assistant coaching role with the Chicago Red Eleven, an amateur affiliate of the Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), this summer.

Madsen, who is in his fourth year at Lakeland and seventh year in coaching, will work with the goalkeepers of the Red Eleven, a member of the W-League, which is a division of the United Soccer Leagues (USL).

The Red Eleven is primarily comprised of current and former NCAA Division I players, including some with prior experience in the WPS or former Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA).

Chicago will scrimmage its professional affiliate, the Red Stars, this Friday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. in Buffalo Grove, Ill. The team opens its regular season on Saturday, May 29. All of the team's home games are played at Benedictine University, a Northern Athletics Conference rival of the Muskies.

Madsen brings a wealth of experience to the position not only as a coach but as a standout, four-year starting goalkeeper at UW-Whitewater.
