Doron Green, a 1970 Lakeland College graduate and member of the college's Athletic Hall of Fame, has resigned, effective June 30, from his position as Lakeland's head men's tennis coach.
"It's hard to leave a job like this, but I felt it was the right time," said
Green, 62. "I've enjoyed the association with the students. I hope I left the program in good shape, and wish the best of luck to whoever is hired as my replacement."
In three years at the helm, Green's Muskies have seen steady improvement, starting with a sixth-place finish in the Northern Athletics Conference in 2008 and ending with consecutive third-place finishes the last two seasons. During his tenure, Green coached a pair of singles champions, including four-time No. 1 champion Andre Glass and Andrew McGlashen, the 2010 winner at the No. 2 spot.
"It was extremely rewarding to see the progress of our players and the evolution of the team," Green said. "We had guys that were pulled out of the dorms during my first year, and they really contributed to our success over the next two years.
"I've been around the school for a long time, but that was my first opportunity to have student contact, which is so important to me. I'll cherish the relationships I have with my players and with my fellow coaches."
Green was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1991 after a standout four-year career. He played No. 1 singles for the Muskies for most of his four years on campus, was team captain and most valuable player for three years, and was an all-district honoree and conference singles and doubles champion as a senior.
Known for his easy-going demeanor and enthusiasm for the game, Green helped a number of Lakeland student-athletes taste the same success, both on the court and in the classroom, as he did during his playing career.
"Aside from his success as a tennis coach, Doron has been a passionate, caring role model for our student-athletes both on and off the court," Lakeland athletic director Jane Bouche said. "We thank Doron for his contributions and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."
A Morrisville, Pa., native, Green graduated from Gow High School in upstate New York where he played tennis for four years. After graduating from Lakeland, he taught tennis under former Davis Cup coach Ed Faulkner, and continued playing tennis in the Navy where he won the U.S. Atlantic Fleet singles and doubles titles in 1971 and 1972. He continued playing until shoulder problems sidelined him in 2000.
Green, who currently resides in Fond du Lac, Wis., will continue in his role as a member of the Lakeland Board of Trustees, a position he was elected to in 1991.
"I will continue to be around the college, hopefully for many years," Green said. "There is a lot of work to be done for the Board of Trustees. I've been here since 1966 and have never left … they can't get rid of me that easily."
A search for Green's replacement will begin shortly.
