Junior Allison Davis scored a team-high 14 points, but the Lakeland College women's basketball team came up short in a 58-60 Northern Athletics Conference loss to Wisconsin Lutheran College Thursday night in the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gym.
It was an up and down battle for the Muskies (8-11, 5-8 NAC) and the second place Warriors as the score was tied nine times throughout the game. In the first half, Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) hit a pair of free throws with 40.7 seconds left to tie the game at 27, but Rachel Johnson hit a jumper in the last seconds to give Wisconsin Lutheran a two-point advantage at halftime.
Lakeland played catch up in the second half after the Warriors went on a 9-0 run at 13:02 to take their largest lead of the game. Davis hit a pair of free throws with 43 seconds left in the game to cut the lead to two, but the hot-shooting Warriors hit a jumper with 17 seconds to secure the win.
The Muskies scored 27 points off of 19 Warriors turnovers, but couldn't make a stop in the final seconds of the game.
Head coach Teri Johnson was pleased with the team's bench play tonight.
"Our bench played big for us," said Johnson. "I thought we did a great job of getting to the line and I'm proud of how this group played tonight."
Dennewitz ended the game with 12 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Davis (Sheboygan, Wis.) added four rebounds to her 14 points.
For the game Lakeland shot 36.2 percent from the field, 21.7 percent from behind the arc and 84.6 percent from the charity stripe. The Warriors shot 45.1 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from 3-point range and 81.8 percent from the free throw line.
Lakeland returns to NAC action on Saturday, Feb. 5, as they travel to Lisle, Ill., to take on second-place South Division foe, Benedictine. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
