Sophomore forward Becky Mayo (Gladstone, Mich.) led the Muskies with a career-high 15 points and added five rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Lakeland College women's basketball team lost to Benedictine University, 54-76, on Saturday afternoon.
Lakeland (8-12, 5-9 NAC) fell behind early and couldn't recover. The Eagles of Benedictine went on a 10-0 run early in the first half and built a 15-point halftime lead, 32-17, after leading by as many as 21. The Muskies offense continued to struggle shooting just 23.1 percent from the field, including 10 percent from behind the three-point arc. Aimee Thrune led Lakeland in the first half with five points.
The second half wasn't much better as the Muskies just couldn't get a rhythm on the offensive end, shooting 33.3 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from behind the arc.
For the game Lakeland shot just 28.6 percent from the field and 19 percent from three-point range. Meanwhile, Benedictine shot 50 percent from the field and 13.3 percent from three.
Senior guard Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) scored nine points and three others added five points.
Benedictine's Tracey Walsh had a game high 14 points.
Lakeland returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 8, when they travel to Mequon, Wis. to face NAC North Division leader, Concordia, Wis. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
