Junior guard Erin Cepa (Glenview, Ill.) tied her season-high with 17 points to lead the Lakeland College women's basketball team to a 60-53 victory over Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Thursday night.
Lakeland (9-13, 6-10 NAC) had a rough start, allowing Maranatha to take an early lead and keep it close for much of the first half. An early lineup change seemed to spark the Muskies though, as their bench came in and scored 29 first half points. Senior Chelsea Coenen (Wrightstown, Wis.) led the way with ten points, while Cepa scored nine of her 17 points in the first half on 3-3 shooting, all three pointers.
Lakeland would stretch their lead to 11 at the half as junior Becca Tilleman (Green Bay, Wis.) beat the clock with a layup at the buzzer, giving the Muskies a 35-24 halftime lead.
The Muskies shot well in the first half, shooting 50 percent (14-28) from the field, including 50 percent (3-6) from behind the three point arc. Their defense was good too, as they held the Crusaders to just 29 percent (9-31) from the field and didn't allow them to hit a three point shot in five attempts. Lakeland also won the battle on the boards as they out rebounded Maranatha 21-16.
In the second half Lakeland's shooting cooled off, but they were able to play solid defense and make runs when needed. With a 41-35 lead at the 15:19 mark, the Muskies used a 19-4 run, to take a 20-point, 60-40 lead with 4:13 left in the game.
Maranatha wouldn't go away though, as they ended the game on a 13-0 run, but ran out of time, as the Muskies escaped with the victory.
Cepa again led the Muskies in the second half with eight points, with junior forward Allison Davis (Sheboygan Wis.) adding six points.
In the half the Muskies shot 32.4 percent (11-34) from the field and 22.2 percent (2-9) from behind the arc. The Crusaders weren't much better as they shot 39.3 percent (11-28) from the field and 25 percent (2-5) from three. For the game, Lakeland shot 40.3 percent (25-62) from the field and 33.3 percent (5-15) from behind the three-point line. Meanwhile, Maranatha shot 33.9 percent (20-59) from the field and 15.4 percent (2-13) from behind the arc.
Cepa was impressive as she went 6-7 from the field and 5-6 from three. Coenen gave the Muskies some added production as well, recording her first double-double of the season as she scored ten points and grabbed ten rebounds. Sophomore forward Becky Mayo also had another solid night as she scored eight points and shot 50 percent (3-6) from the field.
"I was just really feeling it tonight," said Cepa after the game. "My teammates were able to get me the ball off the screens and I was in the zone tonight."
Torey DeLozier had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Crusaders.
The Muskies return to action on Saturday, Feb. 12, as they travel to Fond du Lac, Wis., for a NAC North showdown with Marian University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
