SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Lakeland College wrestling team was able to hold off UW-Eau Claire in a 25-24 victory in the team's first dual meet Saturday afternoon in the Wehr Center Field House.
Sophomore Brandon Garcia (Adell, Wis.) pinned UW-Eau Claire's Levi Pulos in 5:58, giving the Muskies a much needed six points.
Sophomore Ryan Renon (Wrightstown, Wis.) and transfer Freshman James Parker (Milwaukee, Wis.) both earned technical falls in what proved to be major matches for the Muskies. Renon took down Ricky Gonzales in 3:50 and earned a technical fall, which gave Lakeland an extra team point.
Parker dominated the Blugolds' Steven Fishher 21-6. In the last five seconds of the match, Parker recorded another takedown and earned himself a tech fall to give the team a huge five points.
Head coach Mike DeRoehn was impressed with Parker's determination.
"James showed he's going to be special," said DeRoehn. "He needed one more takedown with five seconds left to get a tech fall. He was aware of the situation and did that knowingly for his team. We don't win that dual meet without James' tech fall."
Overall, DeRoehn was pleased with the team win, but disappointed with the overall team score.
"We got pinned a couple of times in matches that we were winning and that's something that shouldn't happen," said DeRoehn.
The Blugolds earned three pins over Max Loberger (Maribel, Wis.), Zach Wetzel (Campbellsport, Wis.) and Rob Forgette (Menominee, Mich.).
Lakeland and UW-Eau Claire also competed in several exhibition matches. Showing heart and proving himself on the mat was freshman Mikey McDonald (Sheboygan, Wis.). McDonald wrestled at 125 and came back in the last 30 seconds with a takedown to earn an 8-6 victory over Neil Manns.
The Muskies return to action on Saturday, Nov.13 at the Pointer Open in Stevens Point, Wis.
