Muskies look to get off to strong start in conference play

The Lakeland College football team (1-2) opens Northern Athletics Conference play Saturday, Oct. 2, when it travels to Aurora, Ill., to face the Spartans (2-1). The Muskies hope to build off last Saturday's win at Hope College, and get their goal of winning another conference championship off to a good start.

Aurora averages 23 points and 363 yards per game, including 123 rushing and 240 through the air. The Spartans are led by junior quarterback Jimmy Bevell, who has completed 37 of 71 passes for 590 yards and five touchdowns while throwing just one interception. Senior quarterback Spenser Adams is the team's leading rusher with 96 yards on 18 attempts while also completing 10 of his 18 passes for 62 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Spartans top running backs are sophomore Steve Rivera and senior Dan Heinz. Rivera is second on the team with 73 yards and Heinz is third with 68. The receiving corps is led by juniors Jordan Peterson and Evan Hackbarth. Peterson has 13 catches for 178 yards and one touchdown. Hackbarth leads the team in yards and touchdowns with 11 catches for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Hackbarth's talent isn't lost on the Lakeland coaches.

"They have three really good receivers," said Lakeland defensive coordinator Colin Bruton. "I'm really impressed with Hackbarth - he made a lot of big plays last week. He has stepped up and become a go-to receiver for their strong-armed QB. We are looking for the guys to play with high energy and lots of emotion, but also maintain composure."

The Muskies average 27.3 points and 258 yards per game, 65 rushing and 258 passing. Lakeland is led by senior quarterback Jake Dworak (De Pere, Wis.), who has completed 55 of 118 passes for 774 yards and six TDs against five interceptions. Dworak's main targets have been senior wide receiver Roberto Flores (Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore wide out Logan Hughley (Oshkosh, Wis.). Flores leads the team with 26 receptions for 388 yards and four touchdowns. Hughley is second on the team with 10 catches for 174 yards and one touchdown.

The Muskies' backfield suffered a setback in the win at Hope after the loss of sophomore Adam Miller (Marion, Wis.) for the season to a leg injury. Junior Jeremy Williams (Zion, Ill.), who averages 59 yards per game, will get more carries, and freshman Tyler Muzzy (Ironwood, Wis.) will be asked to fill the void left by Miller.

"Losing Adam is a big loss both emotionally and physically," said head coach Kevin Doherty. "We need guys to step up and continue to run our offense so we can remain balanced running and passing the ball."

The Muskies will look to clean up their play and remain aggressive in hopes of their first NAC win of the season.

"We have to minimize our turnovers," said Doherty. "Aurora has a very aggressive defense, so we need to be smart with the ball and execute mentally on both sides."

Aurora holds the all-time series lead 14-12, dating back to 1934. The two teams took a 46-year break from 1951-1998, and the Spartans have a 7-5 mark against Lakeland since they resumed playing. The last time the Muskies won at Aurora was during the 2004-05 campaign, a 14-13 victory.
