Women's basketball selected third in NAC preseason coaches' poll

The Lakeland women's basketball team has been selected to finish third in the Northern Athletics Conference North Division by the league's coaches, the conference announced Thursday.

The Muskies finished second in the division last season and won the conference tournament earning a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship. Lakeland received 69 points, including three first-place votes.

Concordia, Wis. has been picked to win the North Division, receiving 82 points, including nine of the 12 first-place votes. In second place by one point is Wisconsin Lutheran who garnered 70 points and one first-place vote. Edgewood (58 points) was fourth, Alverno (44 points) fifth, Maranatha (23 points) sixth and Marian (18 points) was seventh to round out the division.

In the South, Benedictine was the heavy favorite with 11 first-place votes and 73 points, in front of Concordia Chicago (58 points) and MSOE (two first-place votes, 49 points). Aurora (38 points) was picked fourth, Rockford (30 points) fifth and Dominican (25 points) sixth.

Last season the Muskies went 22-7 overall with a 13-4 NAC mark. As a team last season the Muskies averaged 62.8 points and 38.1 rebounds per game while shooting 37 percent from the field and 30 percent from behind the arc. The Muskies return three of their top five leading scorers from last season as well as a talented freshman class.

Senior point guard Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) returns as Lakeland's leading scorer (9.6 points) and leader in assists (66) steals (49), and minutes played (27.3). Dennewitz played in all 29 games last season, starting in 28.

Another key returnee for the Muskies is senior guard Chelsea Coenen. The Wrightstown, Wis. native played in 24 games last season starting in 19 and averaged 20.3 minutes, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.9 points per game.

Also returning for Lakeland is sophomore center Leah Eisner (Stevens Point, Wis.). Last season Eisner played in 28 games and shot 40 percent from the field, averaged 3.8 rebounds and 5.9 point per game. Eisner also led the team with 22 blocks and was the leading scorer in three of the team's final five games, including the Muskies NCAA tournament loss.

Other key contributors returning include juniors Erin Cepa (Glenview, Ill.), Alyssa Schuttenhelm (Waterford, Wis.), Becca Tilleman (Green Bay, Wis.) and sophomore Dana Henrichs (Fall Creek, Wis.).

The NAC enters its third season of divisional play. Lakeland is in the North along with Concordia, Wis., Wisconsin Lutheran, Edgewood, Alverno, Maranatha, and Marian. The Muskies play each team in their division twice.

The South division is comprised of Benedictine, Concordia University Chicago, MSOE, Aurora, Rockford and Dominican. Lakeland will play each of these teams once.
