MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Lakeland College softball team suffered a season-ending 17-10 loss to Concordia, Wis., in game six of the 2011 Northern Athletics Tournament Friday afternoon at Alverno Field.
After a heartbreaking loss to Benedictine in game three, the Muskies (15-26, 15-12 NAC) came out hungry against CUW scoring two runs in the first inning. The lead wouldn't hold long as CUW scored seven runs in the second inning to answer the Muskies. The Falcon's Cara Landherr hit a grand slam to lead CUW's rally.
The Muskies wouldn't retire as they answered the Falcons in the third inning. Sophomore Erin Henk (Hoopeston, Ill.) hit a two-run home run to spark the Muskies own rally. Sophomore Heather Haeflinger (Shawano, Wis.) scored as sophomore Jenny LaLuzerne (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) batted her in on a single to center field. Lakeland scored four runs and generated five hits to cut the lead to one.
Landherr hit another home run in the third inning to bring in three runs and give CUW an 11-6 advantage.
Lakeland would answer CUW once more as freshman Sammy Rieder (St. Cloud, Wis.) hit an inside the park home run to cut the lead to 11-10. Freshman Brittany Jurek (Gladstone, Mich.) got the Muskies started as she batted in freshman Emily Cook (Sauk Prairie, Wis.) in the fifth inning.
CUW would strike again, extending their lead to 17-10 in the fifth and six innings on a couple of Lakeland errors. Lakeland ended the game with eight errors in an up and down battle between rival CUW.
LaLuzerne led the Muskies at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two doubles. Rieder chipped in with two runs and three RBIs.
CUW advances to play Dominican University with the winner advancing to the semi-finals on Saturday.
