Carl Toepel, of Sheboygan, was touched after reading a story in the Nov. 13 edition of The Sheboygan Press about Lakeland College junior football player Tony Faller and the inspiration he draws from his memories of his father and grandfather, who both died earlier this year. Toepel was so touched that on Monday, Nov. 22, he came to campus and gave Faller a plaque that was once passed on to him.
The plaque, titled "Christmas in Heaven," is a poem that was given to Toepel in 2008 by a fellow church member after she saw Toepel's tears in church over his sister's recent death. Toepel, speechless and honored by this gesture, knew one day he would pass the plaque on to someone whose story touched him.
Faller was just as speechless as Toepel was the day he received the poem. The two instantly connected and they shared their stories for a few minutes in the Wehr Center. Toepel believes one day Faller will also pass along "Christmas in Heaven."
