The Lakeland men's volleyball team opened its 2011 campaign with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-23 victory over UW-Stevens Point in a Wisconsin Volleyball Conference contest Monday night in Stevens Point, Wis.

The Muskies (1-0 overall, 1-0 WVC) battled throughout the night with a young line-up, but did enough to get the victory.

"I am very satisfied with our first match effort, but there is still a lot of room for improvements," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "Overall our guys maintained great composure and took care of their business."

Lakeland, which finished second in the nation last season, was led by sophomore Dane Maier (Middleton, Wis.), who had 13 kill, 2 blocks, and an ace. Senior Beau Bradshaw (Oak Lawn, Ill.) added 8 kills and 2 blocks, while freshman Brett Kaczmarek garnered five kills in his first collegiate match. Senior setter Chris Kubacki had 32 assists to lead the Muskies.

Junior Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the defense with 14 digs.

The Muskies host the WVC Crossovers this Saturday, Jan. 29, and Sunday, Jan. 30. Match times are TBA.
