Lakeland College is hosting the 2011 Division III National Collegiate Athletic Association Great Lakes Wrestling Regional on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Todd Wehr Center.
It's just the third time Lakeland has hosted an NCAA postseason tournament event, and the first in wrestling. Lakeland hosted Division III NCAA women's basketball first-round games in 1999 and 2002.
The Great Lakes Regional will bring 15 teams from the Midwest and West to Lakeland as wrestlers attempt to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships, which will be held March 11-12 at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wis. A total of 29 wrestlers will qualify for the national tournament from the Great Lakes Regional, including first- and second-place in each weight class, plus nine at-large wrestlers selected by the regional coaches.
Lakeland head wrestling coach Mike DeRoehn said hosting the regional is great exposure for Lakeland and the wrestling program.
"It's a great opportunity for our wrestlers to wrestle at home in a comfortable environment," said DeRoehn. "It's also a chance to showcase what Lakeland wrestling is all about."
The Todd Wehr Center will open at 8 a.m. and regional competition begins at 9 a.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for K-12 students and children age 2-under are admitted free. All tickets will be sold at the door; no pre-sale of tickets will be held.
If you can't make it to the regional, Lakeland's sports information staff will provide fans with a variety of ways to monitor the action the day of the regional. Fans can follow the regional on a specifically created Twitter account @2011GLWrestling. Tweets will be sent after the completion of every match in each weight class.
Lakeland will also conduct a live blog where fans can interact and ask questions. The championship matches, which are expected to start at approximately at 4:15 p.m., will be video streamed live over the internet. The blog and video are available at http://lakeland.edu/muskieslive.
