The Lakeland College baseball team split their double header today, going 1-1 to open the 2011 season. Lakeland (1-1) won game one, 4-3, behind seniors Matt Katzman (Sauk Prairie, Wis.) and Andrew Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.). In game two, the Muskies bats went quiet, as they fell to Westminster College, 1-0.
In game one, Westminster would get on the board first, scoring two runs in the second inning. The Muskies were able to answer right back, scoring on a Garret Vincetich-Morris (Janesville, Wis.), two-out, RBI single that scored David Cherney (Green Bay, Wis.). The game remaind scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when Schartner hit a double to left center, scoring two runs, giving Lakeland some insurance runs, 4-2.
Schartner took the mound to close the game in the seventh, allowing one run on one hit, with two strikeouts. Katzman had a solid first game, throwing six innings allowing two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
In game two, the Muskies couldn't find a rhythm, as they collected just three hits and only had two runners reach second base. The difference in the game was a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Junior Mike Ruzek (Manitowoc, Wis.) kept the Muskies in the game, as he threw six innings, allowing just one run on three hits, one walk, and five strikeouts.
Lakeland senior David Novak (Algoma, Wis.) was solid behind the plate as he was able to cut down three of four base runners on the day.

The Muskies return to action Monday, March 14, against CUNY Baruch in their third game at the Gene Cusic Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
