Lakeland wins big over Baruch College
Athletics - posted on 3/14/2011
The Lakeland College baseball team came back strong on Monday with a 13-4 win over CUNY Baruch College.
For the second consecutive day the Muskies (2-1) were able to come from behind for the victory. Outstanding pitching by junior Garret Vincetich-Morris (Janesville, Wis.) and a breakout performance by freshman shortstop Ryan Boettcher (Bonduel, Wis.) led the way for Lakeland.
Baruch College got on the board first scoring on an RBI single in the top of the first. They would get on the board again in the scoring this time on an RBI double. The Bearcats would threaten again in the fourth as they loaded the bases with two outs, but a diving catch by center fielder Jeremy Meier (Sauk Prairie, Wis.) ended the inning.
The Muskies, who managed just one hit through three innings, came alive in the fourth as they scored two runs on three hits, with Boettcher getting his first collegiate hit and RBI. While Vincetich-Morris settled into a rhythm on the mound, the Lakeland offense continued to produce, as they would break the game open with a six hit, five run fifth inning. Andrew "Woody" Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) started the rally with a go-ahead RBI double and the big hit coming from Jess Nickel (Waupun, Wis.) who had a two-out, bases loaded, two-RBI double, giving the Muskies a 6-2 lead, which would be more than enough for the win.
However, the Muskies weren't done as they added seven more runs on 11 hits in the final 4 1/3 innings to give the Muskies a 13-2 lead, heading into the ninth. The Muskies would surrender two runs in the ninth but were able to close out the game, a 13-4 victory.
On offense the Muskies were led by Boettcher who went 4-5 and Schartner who went 3-4, each registering an RBI and scoring two runs. Also chipping in were David Cherney (Green Bay, Wis.), going 2-3 with three runs scored and Mike Ruzek (Manitowoc, Wis.) as he added two hits, two RBI's and two runs scored.
Vincetich-Morris gave the Muskies their third straight solid start, going seven innings allowing just two runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking three. Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) pitched the eighth inning, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Derek Loomans (Waupun, Wis.) pitched the ninth, allowing two runs on one hit, while walking two batters.
