Muskies picked fourth in NAC preseason coaches poll

Athletics - posted on 2/22/2011

The Lakeland College softball team has been picked to finish fourth in the Northern Athletics Conference by the league's coaches, the conference announced Tuesday.

The Muskies return nine players from a 2010 squad that ranked second in the nation in triples per game (.78), fourth in scoring (7.82), ninth in slugging percentage (.529), and 19th in batting average (.344). Lakeland will be looking to replace some key players in the infield, but Buchmann is confident in his returnees and newcomers.

Benedictine, last season's regular season champion, received 164 total points and eight first-place votes. Aurora University, last season's NAC Tournament champion, followed in second place with 159 points and five first-place votes. Dominican was picked third with 129 points, one point ahead of Lakeland, which collected 128 points. Concordia, Wis., was fifth with 125 points, Marian received 90 points for sixth and Concordia Chicago was seventh with 89 points.

"Fourth is where I thought we would be selected," Lakeland softball coach Chad Buchmann said. "We return enough experience, both at the plate and in the field, that we are able to focus on our young talent and get them up to speed. We have a good core of young, talented returnees and we will be in the mix all year. We all understand that the goal is to win the conference, make the NCAA tournament and continue the tradition of Muskie softball."

The Muskies open their 2011 campaign on Sunday, March 13, against Southwestern University (Texas) at the Tucson Invitational, playing 10 games during their six-day stay.
