MEQUON, Wis. - The Lakeland College softball team split its doubleheader against Wisconsin Lutheran College in Northern Athletics Conference action Tuesday afternoon in Mequon, Wis.
The Warriors claimed game one, 4-2, but Lakeland's bats went busy in game two for a 10-8 victory.
The Muskies (9-21, 9-7) got off to what looked like a good start in game one, but struggled at the plate and only recorded six hits. Lakeland took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning but couldn't hang on.
Wisconsin Lutheran scored a run in the second inning to tie the game and scored another two runs in the third to take a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore Jenny LaLuzerne (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) scored in the fifth inning on freshman Sammy Rieder's (St. Cloud, Wis.) double to score Lakeland's second and final run of the game.
Rieder led Lakeland at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Lakeland's bats came alive in game two as they registered 10 runs on 18 hits. The Muskies made a rally in the fourth inning, scoring three runs and taking a 7-6 lead. Sophomore Heather Haeflinger (Shawano, Wis.) hit a double to bring home two runs, while Rieder advanced home on a wild throw by the Warriors to give Lakeland a one run cushion.
Wisconsin Lutheran wouldn't go away as they tied the game at seven in the fifth inning. Freshman Brittany Myszka (Edgar, Wis.) scored for Lakeland in the fifth inning to take a 8-7 advantage. Lakeland secured its NAC win in the sixth inning as they scored two runs and held the Warriors to one run in the seventh inning.
Myszka had an outstanding game on the pitching mound as she struck out five batters and kept Lakeland in the game.Samm Janc (Worth, Ill.) led Lakeland in game two as she went 4-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs. Rieder posted another solid performance as she went 4-for-5 including scoring two runs and posting two RBIs. Haeflinger also chipped in at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Lakeland returns to NAC action on Wednesday, April 27, as they travel to Milwaukee, Wis., to take on Alverno College. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
