Haeflinger, Henk and Janc homer, Inferno rallies in game two

MILWAUKEE, Wis.- Sophomores Heather Haeflinger and Erin Henk both hit a home run to lead the Lakeland College softball team to a 9-1 win in game one of its Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader against Alverno College Wednesday afternoon.

The Muskies' (10-22, 10-8) success in game one didn't follow in game two as they dropped a 5-4 decision to the Inferno.

In game one, Alverno got on the board first as they scored one run in the first inning on a Lakeland error. A one-run lead wasn't enough to hold Lakeland as their bats went busy in the second and third innings. Junior Leah Sheahan (Salem, Wis.) got things started as she scored on freshman Chelsea Gile's (Grand Junction, Mich.) bunt.

Lakeland went on to score a combined seven runs in the two innings led by Haeflinger (Shawano, Wis.) and Henk's (Hoopeston, Ill.) home runs. Samm Janc (Worth, Ill.) also produced in the third inning as she doubled, scoring one run.

On the pitching mound, freshman Marissa Roovers (4-4) (Appleton, Wis.) had a steady showing, recording five strike outs while giving up one run on five hits.

Game two wouldn't go as planned for the Muskies as Alverno scored five runs in the sixth inning after Lakeland had a 4-0 lead heading into the sixth. The Inferno recorded eight hits in the sixth inning to earn the rally win.

Lakeland's seventh inning answer came up short as the inning went 1-2-3.

Head coach Chad Buchmann was pleased with the team's overall performance, except in the last two innings of game two.

"We played great softball in game one," said Buchmann. "We even played well up until the sixth inning in game two. I have to give Alverno credit, they bunted well and strung together eight hits in which we couldn't recover from."

Janc led the team at the plate, hitting her second home run of the season as she went  1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. McKenna Wenzel (Brillion, Wis.) found a consistency at the plate as she went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Lakeland returns to NAC action on Friday, April 29, as they travel to Watertown, Wis., to take on Maranatha Baptist Bible College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
