Rieder, Gile homer as Muskies sweep Maranatha

WATERTOWN, Wis. - Freshmen Sammy Rieder (St. Cloud, Wis.) and Chelsea Gile (Grand Junction, Mich.) homered in game one as the Lakeland College softball team swept Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Northern Athletics Conference action Friday afternoon at Brandt Quirk Park.

The Muskies' (12-22, 12-8 NAC) bats were relentless in a 13-1 (five innings) win in game one and a 10-0 (six innings) victory in game two.

Lakeland jumped on the Crusaders immediately, taking a 10-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Sophomore Jenny LaLuzerne (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) started the Muskies off with a single that had a domino effect on the rest of the team as they couldn't miss. LaLuzerne also hit a triple in the first inning to score three runs.

Rieder lead Lakeland at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs scores and two RBIs. She added a double and a home run in the third inning to top off the afternoon. Gile also had a standout game at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs and a home run in the fourth inning.

On the pitching mound, freshman Marissa Roovers (Appleton, Wis.) secured her fifth win of season as she recorded four strikeouts while giving up one run on four hits.

Head coach Chad Buchmann was pleased with the team's focus and hitting abilities.

"We came ready to go," said Buchmann. "We did a really good job adjusting to their (Maranatha's) pitching. We strung a bunch of hits together and were able to score runs. Tomorrow is an important day and we need to come ready to go as we did today."

Game two proved to be just as busy for the Muskies as they scored in every inning except the first. Lakeland hit five doubles and scored 10 runs on 12 hits.

Freshman Samm Janc (Worth, Ill.) led Lakeland in game two as she went 3-for-3 at the plate including two runs and three RBIs. Janc also recorded two doubles on the evening.

On the mound, sophomore Erin Henk (Hoopeston, Ill.) earned her fourth win this season. Henk pitched six innings and recorded four strikeouts while giving up no runs on three hits. She also had a productive game at the plate scoring one run and recording two RBIs.

Lakeland returns to NAC action on Saturday, April 30, as they host the Milwaukee School of Engineering. First pitch is set for noon at Muskie Field.
