Lakeland ties Eagles in NAC play

Athletics - posted on 9/24/2011

Senior forward Ben Koepsell and freshman midfielder Daiya Akiyama each scored a goal and the Lakeland College men's soccer team tied Benedictine University 2-2 in Northern Athletics Conference action Saturday afternoon in Lisle, Ill.

The Muskies (3-2-2, 1-0-1,) struck first as Akiyama (Japan) scored at the 12:17 mark on an assist from sophomore Killian McKenzie (Oshkosh). The Eagles quickly responded, scoring in the 19th minute. Just three seconds later Koepsell (Cedar Grove) found the back of Benedictine's net on an assist from Akiyama to give Lakeland a 2-1 advantage at halftime.

Late in the second half, the Eagles' scored to force overtime for the second year in a row.

"We had a couple good looks late in the game," said head coach Tony Pierce. "The ball got away from us and we hit a wall for about 20-25 minutes. Benedictine took it to us pretty hard in the second half, but we stepped up when we needed to. In overtime, I thought we had the upper hand, but just couldn't put it away. Both teams played hard and I think it was a classic NAC matchup."

Junior goalkeeper Alex Piekarski (Menasha) recorded nine saves and faced 21 shots on the afternoon.

The Muskies return to action on Sept. 27 as they host Edgewood College. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
