Seniors lead Muskies in NAC opener

Athletics - posted on 9/6/2011

Seniors Dana Schmidt, Kristi Borts and Lindsay Rogers each scored a goal to lead the Lakeland College women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Alverno College in the Muskies Northern Athletics Conference opener Tuesday evening in Milwaukee.

After a scoreless first half, the Muskies (1-2) started the second half on the right foot with a goal by Schmidt (Menasha) in the 47th minute to give Lakeland a 1-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Krystina Cook (Des Plaines, Ill.) assisted Schmidt on her first goal of the season.

Rogers (Sheboygan) struck 15 minutes later, netting a goal in the 62nd minute, her second of the season and 31st career goal.

Lakeland imposed its will on the Inferno in the 80th minute as Borts (Milwaukee) registered her second goal of the season to give the Muskies the win.

Head coach Tony Pierce was pleased with the team's second-half play and senior leadership.

"In the first half we didn't play well and we were out of sorts," said Pierce. "After talking things over at halftime, we made some adjustments and things starting coming together. We moved Dana up top and pushed Lindsay back into the midfield, and shortly after we scored. Our three seniors stepped up their performances in the second half and it made the world of a difference. We got the result we wanted."

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Sarbacker (Middleton) earned her first shutout of the year and recorded three saves.

The Muskies return to nonconference action on Thursday, Sept. 8, as they host Northland International. Game time is 2 p.m. at Muskie Field.
