Muskies split with Eagles, snap losing streak

The Lakeland College baseball team split their double-header against NAC foe Benedictine College on Saturday afternoon. Their win in game two snapped the Muskies nine-game losing streak.

The Muskies (6-10, 1-5 NAC) suffered a tough loss in game one, losing 10-9 in 11 innings. Lakeland got off to a great start but just couldn't close the door on the Eagles.

In the bottom of the first, the Muskies took the early lead after a Mike Ruzek (Manitowoc, Wis.) RBI single scored Andrew "Woody" Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.), junior Erik Kozey (Medford, Wis.) hit the first home run of the year for Lakeland, a two-run shot scoring Ruzek and giving the Muskies an early 3-0 lead.

Benedictine would get two runs back in the third, but the Muskies scored three times in their half of the third as well, with Ruzek, Ryan Boettcher (Bonduel, Wis.), and Tim Kuchenbecker (Billion, Wis.) each recording an RBI.

After reaching on an error in the fourth inning, Schartner would score on a passed ball, giving the Muskies a 7-2 lead. It was short lived though, as the Eagles scored six runs on four hits in the sixth inning, to take an 8-7 lead. Boettcher would beat out a potential double play in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.

The Muskies would fail to turn a double play in the 11th that would eventually lead to the winning run.

Ruzek went 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, walking three and striking out 11. Kozey would pitch 2.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits, two walks, and one strikeout. Schartner (0-1) would take the loss, going three innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Schartner, Ruzek and Boettcher each had three hits and at least one RBI. Kozey and Andy Chitwood (Muscoda, Wis.) each had two hits and scored at least one run.

In game two, the Muskies finally had the ball bounce their way and were able to break their nine-game losing streak.

The Eagles would score first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but senior Matt Katzman (Sauk Prairie, Wis.) would settle in, seven hits and one run over the next eight innings.

Meanwhile, the Muskie offense back their pitcher as Kozey would knock in Ruzek in the fourth and would later score on a Jess Nickel (Waupun, Wis.) double play. Ruzek's RBI single in the fifth would score Chitwood, and give Katzman all the support he needed.

Katzman (2-3) would get the win going 8.2 innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits, while walking one and striking out two. Senior catcher David Novak (Algoma, Wis.) recorded his first save, pitching a third of an inning and striking out the only batter he faced.

Ruzek and Kozey would lead the way at the plate again in game two, each going 2-4 with one run and one RBI each.
